Michigan mastodon to find new ‘habitat' at Cranbrook Institute of Science

If you've ever paid a visit to Oakland Community College's Highland Lakes campus, you've likely crossed paths with the school's Groleau-White Lake Mastodon, lovingly nicknamed “Elmer.â€

Beginning next week, Elmer the mastodon will migrate from the upper floors of Levinson Hall to the Cranbrook Institute of Science in Bloomfield Hills under a long-term loan agreement with OCC.

After Elmer is carefully disassembled and transported to Cranbrook, crews from the institute will reconstruct and prepare the mastodon for public display as a centerpiece of future exhibition expected to open in summer 2027.

Wayne County man arrested after brief police chase, hours-long standoff

A man was arrested on Monday after a brief police chase ended in an hours-long standoff in Van Buren Township.

At around 4 p.m. on June 15, police received a call reporting that a driver, armed with a gun, was heading into Canton Township with the possible intent to harm himself or others. Officers tried to stop the car, which led to a brief police chase that ended at the driver's home in the 6000 block of Sandalwood in Van Buren Township.

Police said the man ran to his home and allegedly barricaded himself inside with two family members.

Renters booked a private pool for a party in an Oakland County neighborhood, and residents in the area said that turned into “total chaos.â€

Birmingham neighbors said “more than 150 people†flooded their quiet street and cars blocked streets and driveways. They also described public intoxication and lewd behavior in front of families and children.

Birmingham Police told Local 4 they were called multiple times Saturday to a home on Westchester Way, south of Maple, after a backyard pool was rented through the Swimply app, which allows homeowners to rent out their pools by the hour.

Residents at Detroit luxury apartment complex frustrated over growing maintenance concerns

Tenants at a luxury apartment complex on Detroit's east side say they've dealt with broken elevators, inoperable entrance gates and a growing backlog of maintenance requests for weeks — prompting city inspectors to step in.

Residents at Orleans Landing, located near the Detroit River, reached out with concerns about ongoing issues at the property.

The complaints included elevators being out of service for an extended period, security gates left open or not working, and a lack of communication from management.

Weather: Showers, storms return to Southeast Michigan Tuesday as a cooler pattern settles in

Metro Detroit is in for another active weather day as scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms develop this afternoon and evening. The greatest coverage is expected between noon and 10 p.m., with a few storms capable of becoming strong to severe.

While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, there is a marginal (level 1 out of 5) risk for our western suburbs where isolated storms may produce damaging wind gusts and large hail.

Temperatures will remain comfortable despite the unsettled weather, with highs reaching the mid to upper 70s across Southeast Michigan with breezy conditions.
